Overview[]
Australia[]
For most of its history, the land known as "Australia" has been inhabited by various Aboriginal peoples, who were isolated from the rest of the world. Upon the European discovery of this vast landmass in 1606, many countries tried to take portions of it. Eventually, the British took the entire island of Australia, turning it into one of their most prosperous - and largest - colonies. Due to the vast amount of available land, the British Empire sent convicts to the territory, as a way of keeping the British Isles crime-free. Eventually, in 1901, Australia got its first Prime Minister, and eventually independence from Great Britain. As a newly-formed nation, Australia joined the First and Second World Wars, helping to put its place on the world map. Today, Australia is one of the most visited tourist destinations in the world, as well as having strong economic and political links with other countries.
Paul Keating[]
Paul John Keating was leader of the Australian Labor Party and Prime Minister of Australia from December 1991 to March 1996. Growing up in working-class Bankstown, a suburb of Sydney, Keating left school at age 14. He became involved in trade union activity and labour politics and was elected in 1969 to the House of Representatives at age 25. Acquiring a reputation for both pointed political invective and party loyalty, he was chosen by Prime Minister Bob Hawke to be federal treasurer in 1983. Keating became a stellar performer, making his mark with a blend of earthy attacks on his opponents and high-level explanations and lectures on the more arcane aspects of economics. In 1991, while Australia struggled with economic recession, Hawke became embroiled in a leadership battle with Keating for control of the Labor Party and the office of the prime minister. In December that year, Hawke called for a party vote and lost by a small margin to Keating. As prime minister, Keating inaugurated financial programs aimed at national recovery. He was reelected prime minister in 1993 as the economy regained strength, but his government was defeated by a coalition of the Liberal Party and the National Party in the elections of March 2, 1996, ending 13 years of rule by the Labor Party. Keating became a successful business consultant after his political career.
Dawn of Man[]
"G'day to you, Paul Keating, illustrious Prime Minister of Australia! Elected into the House of Representatives at the age of only 25, you rose through the ranks of the Labor Party, serving in every Labor government from the 1970s onwards. As Treasurer under the charismatic Bob Hawke, you completely reformed Australia's economy, bringing never-before-seen wealth and prosperity to the young country. But, unlike the dessicated coconuts, L platers and clodhoppers who opposed you, you never lost sight of the Australian people! Your tenure as Prime Minister brought reforms to ensure financial stability for every Australian, and was the first to ensure the rights of Aboriginal and Torrest Strait Islander groups to their native title. Truly, you were a Prime Minister for the modern age!
Oh, Prime Minister Keating, the true believers have kept their faith through these difficult times, and beg for your return! Will you lead Australia to the sweetest victory of all? Will you build a civilization to stand the test of time?"
Introduction: "Well, g'day! My name's Paul. Australia is still a young country, and I plan to change it inexorably for good, for the better."
Introduction: "Pleasure to meet you. I'm Paul Keating, and we in Australia are ready and willing to have a long and prosperous relationship with the lot of you! The last thing we need now is a return to the old philosophy that the only useful interest is self-interest."
Introduction: (rarer) "Hey, good evening, I'm Paul. Pleased to meet you all."
Defeat: "Well, colour me surprised! I thought you were a real low altitude flier, all tip and no iceberg, but I guess I was wrong! Instead you're a slithering, mangy maggot. You can fire a gun alright, but you couldn't manage a tart shop."
Defeat: "That was like being flogged with warm lettuce. You knew you'd lose any diplomatic conflict so you sent in your little band of soldiers instead? You're pathetic. A real stupid, foul-mouthed grub."
Defeat: "You're more to be pitied than despised. You've completely gone troppo."
