Overview[]
Au Lac[]
Au Lac was an ancient state located in what is now northern Vietnam. It existed during the early centuries CE and played a significant role in shaping the region’s history. The exact boundaries and details of Au Lac remain somewhat elusive, but it is generally associated with the Red River delta and its surrounding areas.
The people of Au Lac were known as the Lac Viet, and their society was influenced by both indigenous traditions and interactions with neighboring cultures. The region was rich in natural resources, including fertile land for agriculture and access to river trade routes. Au Lac’s rulers held sway over various citadels and settlements, forming a loose confederation.
In the year 40 CE, two heroic women emerged as leaders of the first Vietnamese independence movement: Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, collectively known as the Trung Sisters. Their rebellion was a response to the oppressive rule of the Chinese Han-dynasty overlords in Jiaozhi (now northern Vietnam).
Trung Trac, the elder sister, had suffered a personal tragedy when her husband, Thi Sach (lord of Chau Dien), was assassinated by a Chinese general. This event galvanized her into action. Alongside her sister Trung Nhi and other aristocrats, Trung Trac led a rebellion against the Han-dynasty authorities. Their determination and leadership qualities stood as a testament to the respected position and freedom of women in Vietnamese society, in contrast to the male-dominated norms of China and India.
Within a year, the Trung Sisters and their allies controlled 65 northern citadels. At Me Linh, in the lower Red River delta, they boldly proclaimed themselves queens of an independent state (whose name remains unknown) extending from southern China to the present site of Hue. Their vision was to free their people from foreign domination and establish a sovereign Vietnamese realm.
However, their revolutionaries faced immense challenges. They lacked peasant support, adequate supplies, and trained forces. General Ma Yüan (Ma Vien), a seasoned Chinese commander, led the Han-dynasty troops against them. Despite their courage, the Trung Sisters suffered defeat. First at Lang Bac (near present-day Hanoi), and later decisively at Hat Mon (now Son Tay), they were unable to withstand the might of the Chinese forces.
In a tragic turn of events, rather than face capture, the Trung Sisters chose to end their lives. They drowned themselves at the confluence of the Day and Red rivers in 43 CE. Their legacy endures through the Hai Ba (“Two Sisters”) pagoda in Hanoi and the Hat Mon pagoda in Son Tay. The rebellion of the Trung Sisters remains a powerful symbol of Vietnamese resistance against foreign oppression and a testament to the indomitable spirit of those who fight for freedom and justice.
Trung Trac[]
The Trung Sisters, Trung Trac and Trung Nhi, were first-century Vietnamese military leaders who led a rebellion against the Chinese Han Dynasty’s domination in AD 40. They successfully ruled for three years after their revolt, which is considered one of the first major uprisings against foreign rule in Vietnamese history. The sisters are celebrated as national heroines in Vietnam, symbolizing resistance and independence.
