Overview[]

Armenia[]

The history of Armenia is the history of a country split between empires. Armenia is a country in the Caucasus region, with geopolitical ties to Europe. The first Armenian state of Urartu was established in 860 BC, and by the 6th century BC it was replaced by the Satrapy of Armenia. The Kingdom of Armenia reached its height under Tigranes the Great in the 1st century BC and in the year 301 became the first state in the world to adopt Christianity as its official religion. Armenia still recognises the Armenian Apostolic Church, the world's oldest national church, as the country's primary religious establishment. Under the Bagratuni dynasty, the Bagratid Kingdom of Armenia was restored in the 9th century before falling in 1045. An Armenian principality and later a kingdom Cilician Armenia was located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea between the 11th and 14th centuries. This was followed by Ottoman and Persian rule, under which the Armenians were systematically exterminated in the Armenian genocide. In 1918, the First Republic of Armenia was established, but incorporated into the Soviet Union by 1920. In 1991, the modern independent republic was declared.

Andranik Ozanian[]

Andranik Ozanian was an Armenian military commander and statesman, the best known fedayi and a key figure of the Armenian national liberation movement. From the late 19th century to the early 20th century, he was one of the main Armenian leaders of military efforts for the independence of Armenia. He became active in an armed struggle against the Ottoman government and Kurdish irregulars in the late 1880s. Andranik joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation and sought to defend the Armenian peasantry living in their ancestral homeland. From the early stages of World War I, Andranik commanded the first Armenian volunteer battalion within the Russian Imperial army against the Ottoman Empire, capturing and later governing much of the traditional Armenian homeland. Andranik led the defense of Erzurum in early 1918, but was forced to retreat eastward due to an threat of encirclement and a lack of food, but played a key role in repelling the Ottomans at the Battle of Sardarabad. Andranik never accepted the existence of the First Republic of Armenia because it included only a small part of the area many Armenians hoped to make independent. Andranik, independently from the Republic of Armenia, fought in Zangezur against the Azerbaijani and Turkish armies, and helped to keep it within Armenia. Andranik left Armenia in 1919 due to disagreements with the Armenian government and spent his last years of life in Europe and the United States seeking relief for Armenian refugees.

Dawn of Man[]

"You have been called to fight once again, oh General Andranik Ozanian, protector and hero of the Armenian people. Throughout the late nineteenth century, you fought the Ottoman government and Kurdish irregulars who had infringed upon Armenians during the Hamidian massacres. Rising to become a leading fedayi leader, you joined the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, but left in 1907 over disapproval of cooperation with the Young Turks, who later committed the Armenian Genocide. Commanding units in Bulgaria and Russia, in the wake of the World War I you rose against the Ottomans for Armenian independence, while not accepting the existence of the First Republic of Armenia, as it covered only a small portion of the traditional Armenian lands. In support of your goals, you rose once again and fought in Zangezur against the Azerbaijani and Turkish armies, and helped to keep it within Armenia. Even though you were, and remain, an Armenian hero, you died in exile, travelling the United States and Europe drumming up support for the Armenian cause.

Oh resolute Andranik, your people call out once more for the national hero they knew. The desire a strong, determined individual to protect them in a world where allies are shrinkingly sparse, and the world turns a blind eye to atrocities. Can you once again defend the Armenian people? Will you build a civilization that can stand the test of time?"

Introduction: "Hello, and welcome to the ancient and proud land of Armenia. I will never stop fighting for it."

Defeat: "Every night before I die, I shall remember what I did for my nation on that day. You can never suppress the Armenian spirit."
