America[]
The United States of America is a world "super-power" (which more or less means that it possesses weapons capable of destroying everything on the planet). A relatively young civilization, the United States formed in the 18th century, nearly self-destructed in the 19th century, and became the most powerful and dominant military, technological, cultural and economical civilization in the 20th. One can hardly guess what will happen to it in the 21st.
Norton I[]
Joshua Abraham Norton, Norton I., Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico, was a whimsical figure of San Francisco, California. Originally making a successful living as a commodities trader and real estate speculator, he was financially ruined following a failed bid to corner the rice market during a shortage prompted by a famine in China. Norton had no formal political power; nevertheless, he was treated deferentially in San Francisco, and currency issued in his name was honored in the establishments that he frequented. Popular among residents of San Francisco, upwards of 10,000 people lined the streets to pay homage to him after death.

"Hail to you, Norton I. At the peremptory request and desire of a large majority of the citizens of these United States, you, Joshua Norton, formerly of Algoa Bay, Cape of Good Hope, and now for the last 9 years and 10 months past of S. F., Cal., are declared and proclaimed to be Emperor of the U. S. This we declare in virtue of the citizens of the United States, aggrieved by the deplorable corruption besieging her government and plaguing her nation. So, let it not be said, then, that these United States are not without liberty and virtue upon which to gaze.
