Overview

Aceh

The Aceh Sultanate was a strong regional power located at the northern tip of Sumatra, with a peak in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its location gave it a significant historical advantage from both an economic and trading perspective. Pilgrims on the Hajj brought significant income to Mecca through its role as the final launching point from the Indonesian archipelago, giving Aceh the necessary funds to control trade through the straights of Malacca and increase their income further. At its peak, the sultanate covered much of the Sumatran coast and the southern end of the Malay peninsula, and was able to stand toe-to-toe with invading Portugese forces and other states in the region.

Iskandar Muda

Iskandar Muda was the most powerful Sultan of Aceh, reigning for nearly thirty years at the start of the 17th century. Under his rule, Aceh reached its greatest extend, including much of Sumatra and the Malay peninsula. Born as Perkasa Alam, Iskandar Muda was descended from both lines of Acehnese sultans, and was briefly imprisoned after attempting to lead a rebellion against his uncle in 1605. The successes of Iskandar Muda were based on his military strength. His armed forces consisted of a navy of heavy galleys each with 600-800 men, a cavalry using Persian horses, an elephant corps, conscripted infantry forces and more than 2000 cannons and guns (of both Sumatran and European origin).

Under your command, Aceh grew mighty - expanding her reach beyond the western reaches of Sumatra to include vast swathes of the island and even Malay - no longer would it be merely a waypoint to Mecca! Your ships were the rulers of the waves, unchallenged by even the mightiest of foreign craft, and helped your rule grow wide. So fearsome is your military prowess that you have been named the successor to Iskandar himself, a name which still instils fear and awe from Malacca to Constantinople. Yet you grow restless still - the waves beckon, with more beyond the horizon to rule over.
